World Cup 2026 Round of 32 — June 30: France vs Sweden, Ivory Coast vs Norway, Mexico vs Ecuador
Mexico
EcuadorThe Round of 32 continues on June 30 with three matches that span the full length of the host nations — from MetLife Stadium in New Jersey to Estadio Azteca in Mexico City, with a stop in Dallas in between. France take on Sweden, Ivory Coast meet Norway in a tense European-African duel, and Mexico face Ecuador in the tournament's most electric atmosphere. Here is everything to know before kick-off.
France vs Sweden — MetLife Stadium, New York/NJ
France enter the knockout stage as Group I winners and one of the clear favorites to win the entire tournament. Kylian Mbappé has been unstoppable through the group stage, scoring multiple goals and cementing his status as the Golden Boot favorite. Les Bleus have looked tactically disciplined under their coach, allowing very few clear-cut chances while devastating on the counter-attack.
Sweden qualified as one of the eight best third-placed teams — finishing third in Group F behind Netherlands and Japan. Despite missing out on second place, Sweden showed resilience and quality throughout the group stage. Their strength lies in collective organisation and the physical presence of Alexander Isak, who will test France's central defenders.
On paper this looks like a mismatch, but Sweden have the depth to make France uncomfortable. Mbappé and the French attack should be too much in the end — but Sweden will not go quietly.
Ivory Coast vs Norway — AT&T Stadium, Dallas
This is the standout match of the day. Ivory Coast, runners-up in Group E, face Norway who finished second in Group I — the group of death that also featured France. Erling Haaland carried Norway through the group stage with relentless finishing, but now he faces a different test: the organised, physical defence of the Elephants.
Ivory Coast have pace and power across their entire line-up. Sébastien Haller leads the attack and will be a handful for Norway's centre-backs. In midfield, Ivory Coast have the energy and creativity to press high and disrupt Norway's build-up before Haaland even touches the ball.
Haaland vs the Ivory Coast defence is the individual battle of the day. AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas — home of the Dallas Cowboys — provides a 80,000-seat arena worthy of the occasion. Expect goals, expect drama.
Mexico vs Ecuador — Estadio Azteca, Mexico City
Estadio Azteca. A stadium that has hosted two World Cup finals and Maradona's most legendary moments. For Mexico, this is more than a Round of 32 match — it is a statement of intent in front of 87,000 of their own fans. El Tri won Group A and arrive at the Azteca with full confidence and maximum home support.
Ecuador qualified as a third-place team from Group E — the same group as Germany and Ivory Coast — which shows the quality they possess. La Tri have plenty of experience in big matches and play a well-structured 4-4-2 that can absorb pressure and hit on the break. Facing 87,000 hostile fans at altitude in Mexico City, however, is a unique challenge.
The noise inside the Azteca will be unlike anything in this tournament so far. Mexico's attack — built around pace down the flanks and clinical finishing — should be too much at home. But upsets happen, and Ecuador have the quality to cause one.
Key Numbers
France have scored 9+ goals in the group stage and conceded just 1 — the best defensive record of any major contender.
Erling Haaland has scored 4+ goals in the group stage — one of the top scorers in the tournament alongside Mbappé and Messi.
Estadio Azteca becomes the only venue to host Round of 32 matches at a World Cup for the third time (it hosted key knockout games in 1970 and 1986).
Mexico have never been eliminated before the Round of 16 at a home World Cup — and they will be desperate to go further this time.
Ivory Coast vs Norway is the only Round of 32 match featuring two European-quality midfields from different continents — a genuine 50-50 on paper.
What's at Stake
The winners of today's three matches advance to the Round of 16 (scheduled for July 4–7), where they will face the winners of other Round of 32 matches. The bracket rewards teams that win comfortably — a knockout tournament is unforgiving from here.
For Mexico, defeat at the Azteca would be a national disaster. For Haaland and Norway, a win today could set up an encounter with Brazil or France later in the bracket. For France, this is the start of what they believe is their path to a second consecutive World Cup title.
