How the 2026 World Cup Played Out

Spain won the 2026 World Cup, beating Argentina 1-0 in extra time of the Final on a Ferran Torres goal — a run that earned Rodri the tournament's Golden Ball and confirmed 19-year-old Lamine Yamal as the breakout star of his generation. Lionel Messi reached his sixth World Cup final with Argentina, finished as runner-up, and announced his retirement from the national team weeks later. Kylian Mbappé finished as the tournament's top scorer with 10 goals and became football's all-time leading World Cup scorer with 22 career goals, even though France were eliminated before the Final. Norway's first World Cup appearance since 1998 produced one of the tournament's best stories — Erling Haaland powered a run that knocked out Brazil in the Round of 16 before Norway fell to England in the Quarterfinal. England and France met in the third-place match after both exited in the Semifinals.
